High in the majestic Himalayan belt, the sacred journey to Saroli Mata, also called Maa Chandi, stands as a symbol of enduring faith and an escape into nature’s beauty.

Located in the serene Saroli area of Assar in the Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory (JKUT), this venerable yatra attracts thousands of devotees each year. Pilgrims experience not only the peace of mountain air and lush greenery but also a deep sense of spiritual rejuvenation.

For many, the journey is more than a trek; it is a quest for inner peace, where the mountains echo with devotion, blending natural and spiritual energy.

Trekking to Temple: A Path of Faith and Challenge

About 50 kilometers from Doda’s district headquarters and around 20 kilometers from Assar, the pilgrimage to Saroli Mata includes a breathtaking but challenging 8 to 10-kilometer trek through rugged trails from Marhi village.

Winding through dense forests and rolling hills, these paths lead pilgrims up to an altitude where the air feels fresher and the silence is profound. Although physically demanding, each step toward the temple is enveloped by nature’s beauty and spiritual aura, guiding devotees closer to Saroli Mata blessings.

Local Beliefs and Devotees’ Experiences

Saroli Mata’s temple has become a faith emblem in the region, drawing devotees from across Jammu and Kashmir. Local beliefs adds depth to this spiritual experience, connecting the pilgrimage to stories of divine intervention.

While talking to The Grameen Express (TGE), Himmat Singh, a resident of Ranka village, said, “I’ve come to seek Maa Chandi’s blessings three or four times in my life,” he said, reflecting on the spiritual protection believed to be granted by the goddess.

According to local tales, demons once haunted the forests, unsettling villagers until they prayed for Maa Chandi to make this place her home, bringing peace to the region.

For regular pilgrims like Suram Chand, who has been visiting the temple annually for nearly a decade, the journey holds personal significance. “I’ve seen the pilgrimage site develop over the years, each change making the journey more accessible and meaningful,” he said.

He added that with improved shelter and other basic facilities become more manageable, preserving the serene natural beauty that defines the experience.

The Year-End Navratras: A Vibrant Mela and Cultural Gathering

While devotees visit Saroli Mata throughout the year, the temple holds special significance during the year-end Navratras, particularly during the first three days.

During this period, a grand mela (festival) is organized, drawing families and friends from far and wide. This vibrant event transforms the tranquil mountain setting, filling it with prayers, festive stalls, cultural performances, and traditional offerings.

The annual celebration reflects the rich cultural heritage of Doda, strengthening communal ties and offering a unique blend of spirituality and festivity.

Developing religious tourism in Doda could benefit the local population, providing job opportunities and reducing migration to urban areas. With better livelihood prospects at home, residents may find more reasons to stay within their communities.

Initiatives and Future Potential

From time to time, the district administration collaborates with local NGOs, community groups, and sometimes with the tourism department to highlight these sacred sites.

Events such as the Snow Festival in Lal Draman, Kander Devta Mela at Dal Draman, Chandi Mata Mela at Dedni, Kailash Kund Yatra in Bhaderwah and Chownd Mata Yatra of Gadi draw attention to Doda’s unique blend of nature and spirituality.

However, many other sites remain unexplored, and there is an opportunity to improve accessibility and amenities at these locations, creating pathways, roads, and facilities that will enhance the visitor experience.

Doda’s rich landscapes and sacred sites offer a sanctuary where visitors can find both peace and inspiration, creating a haven that showcases the harmonious blend of tradition, natural beauty, and community.
