JAMMU Tawi, Oct 24: The preparations for the celebrations of Accession Day in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir have gathered pace, with programmes planned at administrative and political levels to mark the historic occasion on October 26.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) unit of J&K will organise different programmes at its headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, Jammu, as well as in all the 20 districts of J&K.
Lieutenant Governor (LG), Manoj Sinha, will also participate in the programmes scheduled to mark the occasion. Many senior central BJP leaders are expected to join the celebrations.
Accession Day is observed in Jammu and Kashmir on October 26 to commemorate the historic event in 1947, when the then ruler of the princely state, Maharaja Hari Singh, signed the Instrument of Accession to join India.
The accession took place against the backdrop of an attack by tribal invaders in October 1947. Following the Maharaja’s signing of the Instrument of Accession, the Indian government accepted the accession, and the Indian Army reached Jammu and Kashmir to help defend the region against the attackers.
The day holds considerable historical and political significance in Jammu and Kashmir. It is observed to remember the state’s accession to India and the events that shaped its subsequent history.
After the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, Accession Day has continued to receive attention in political and public discourse in the Union Territory.
The government offices and other institutions have also marked the occasion through various programmes in previous years.
This year, preparations are underway to organise events at different levels, with political representatives and party workers expected to participate in the celebrations.
The programmes are aimed at commemorating the historical significance of October 26 and highlighting the Jammu and Kashmir’s relationship with the Indian Union.
