JAMMU, Sept 28: A video purportedly showing a police personnel in uniform allegedly demanding and accepting money from a truck driver at the Lakhanpur checkpoint in Kathua district went viral on social media on Monday, prompting police to verify the matter.
In the video, reportedly recorded by the truck driver, the police personnel is seen asking for money after the driver allegedly failed to produce a bilty for the goods being transported. The driver initially offers Rs 30, while the cop allegedly demands Rs 100.
The video shows the driver eventually handing over the demanded amount before leaving the checkpoint.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Kathua, Sunil Kesar, said the matter had come to the police’s notice and was being verified.
The Lakhanpur entry point falls under the jurisdiction of the State Taxes Enforcement wing, Kathua.
Deputy Commissioner, State Taxes Enforcement, Kathua, Joginder Singh, said the incident had no connection with his department. He said department teams deployed at the location conduct random checks and verify e-way bills and have been instructed to remain in proper uniform.
A lorry receipt, commonly referred to as a truck bilty, is a document issued by a transporter or carrier as proof of receipt of goods for road transportation.
The video has triggered reactions on social media, with questions being raised over the alleged conduct of the police personnel at the entry checkpoint. (Agencies)
