Projects to promote J&K’s heritage, local products and market access for artisans
Srinagar, Oct 21: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Wednesday reviewed the progress of the proposed PM Ekta Malls in Jammu and Srinagar, aimed at showcasing J&K’s handicrafts, handlooms, indigenous products and cultural heritage while expanding market opportunities for local artisans and entrepreneurs.
The meeting, attended by senior officials of the Industries and Commerce, Public Works and other departments, discussed the status of the projects being executed by the Industries and Commerce Department through the PWD.
Dulloo said the malls would strengthen market linkages for local producers, promote tourism and enterprise development, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities. He stressed that products under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative and those carrying Geographical Indication (GI) tags should receive greater visibility and access to domestic and international markets.
Commissioner Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Vikramjit Singh informed the meeting that the Jammu mall is proposed to be built over 24 kanals at Rail Head Complex, with approximately 2.14 lakh square feet of floor space. The project, approved at a cost of Rs 125 crore, will feature retail outlets, a craft museum, an art gallery, exhibition spaces, a food court and other public amenities.
The Srinagar mall is proposed at Kashmir Haat Complex on Jehangir Chowk-Batmaloo Road, spread over 15 kanals, with approximately 1.81 lakh square feet of floor space. Approved at a cost of Rs 130 crore, it will include retail shops, a craft museum, exhibition hall, auditorium, indoor amphitheatre, dining facilities and guest accommodation.
The meeting was informed that the contract committee considered both projects on October 19, with Letters of Award expected by the third week of November 2026.
The malls are proposed to be operated and maintained under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, with private partners to be selected through competitive bidding.
Once completed, the projects are expected to provide integrated platforms for commerce, culture and tourism, helping local producers expand their market reach.
