Jammu Tawi, October 1: The demand for granting official status to the Punjabi language in Jammu and Kashmir has gained momentum, with members of the Sikh community and representatives of various Gurdwara management committees joining the campaign.
Representatives from Gurdwaras in Rani Talab, Talab Tillo, Guru Nanak Nagar, Digiana Ashram, Simbal Camp, Bhor Camp, Gadigarh and surrounding areas have reportedly come together to raise the issue before the government.
Speaking on the matter, prominent leaders said Punjabi is an important part of Jammu and Kashmir’s social, cultural and historical heritage.
They said the Punjabi-speaking community has been seeking appropriate government recognition and official status for the language for a long time and urged the government to consider the demand seriously.
Speakers at the meeting also called for adequate opportunities for Punjabi education in government schools. They said strengthening Punjabi education at the school level would help connect younger generations with their mother tongue, culture and history.
According to the representatives, efforts will be made to approach presidents of different political parties, elected representatives and public representatives to build wider support for the demand.
The issue is subsequently proposed to be taken up with the Chief Minister, Lieutenant Governor, concerned Central authorities and the Prime Minister’s Office.
Representatives of the Sikh community said the campaign would be pursued through peaceful and democratic means.
They also appealed to members of society to come together for the preservation and promotion of Punjabi language and cultural heritage.
