Dachigam National Park Shut Till Oct 31 to Protect Hangul During Rutting Season

SRINAGAR, Oct 12: Entry into Dachigam National Park has been suspended until October 31 to protect the endangered Hangul, or Kashmiri stag, from human disturbance during its ecologically sensitive rutting season.

The month-long restriction applies to all visitors, tourists and other persons, except those involved in essential departmental duties, wildlife protection and management operations, emergencies or activities specifically authorised by the competent authority.

The order was issued following a recommendation by the Wildlife WardenCentral Division, Srinagar, and endorsed by the Regional Wildlife Warden, Kashmir Region. Any permitted entry during the restriction period will be strictly regulated and kept to the minimum necessary.

The Wildlife Warden has been directed to ensure strict implementation by briefing entry gates, checkpoints and field staff, preventing unauthorised access and publicising the restriction.

The closure aims to minimise human disturbance during the Hangul’s breeding cycle and strengthen conservation efforts for the species, of which Dachigam National Park remains the principal stronghold.

The Hangul population has shown an encouraging rise over the past decade, increasing from 183 in 2015 to 323 in 2025. However, the species continues to face significant conservation challenges and is classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is also listed under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.

Over the past four to five decades, the population has declined drastically due to factors including poaching, competition with livestock, habitat degradation and fragmentation.

The species’ population is also believed to have become largely disconnected from smaller groups in Shikargah, Tral Wildlife Sanctuary and Overa Wildlife Sanctuary in Anantnag, adding to concerns over its long-term survival.
