The Economic Offences Wing of Crime Branch Jammu has filed a chargesheet against two accused in an alleged online fraud case in which a man was reportedly deceived through a phone call and persuaded to transfer money on the pretext of providing urgent medical assistance.
The case was registered under FIR No. 61/2023. Following investigation, the chargesheet was presented before the 13th FC Jammu court against Dolly Devi, a resident of Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh, and Shashi Pal, a resident of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. Both were reportedly arrested during the investigation.
According to the complaint filed by Bodh Raj, he allegedly received a call from a person posing as his colleague. The caller reportedly claimed that his colleague’s son urgently required medical treatment and sought financial assistance. Believing the request, the complainant allegedly transferred money through PhonePe.
During the investigation, examination of bank accounts and transaction records allegedly revealed that the money had reached accounts linked to Dolly Devi and Shashi Pal. Investigato also identified Ashraful Alam, a resident of Assam, who is allegedly suspected of withdrawing the money in cash.
The investigation, conducted under the supervision of DSP Goldy Sharma, reportedly identified Mohammad Zuber Alam as the person who allegedly made the call using a false identity. According to the Crime Branch, notices were issued to Mohammad Zuber Alam and Ashraful Alam to join the investigation, but they allegedly did not cooperate.
Based on documentary, banking and electronic evidence, the chargesheet has been filed before the court. The Crime Branch has also sought action under Section 512 CrPC against the two accused reported to be evading the investigation.
The agency has advised people to verify emergency requests before transferring money, particularly when such requests are received over phone calls or digital payment platforms.
